Hot, Hip Louisville Ranked Amongst Hottest Hipster Markets In America

We’ve always known that Louisville is a hot place to live. Now, the rest of the country is in on the secret. Realtor.com and Yelp have ranked the Hottest Hipster Markets in America, based on markets with strong buyer demand (where homes are selling in about 30 days), that feature the highest concentration of “hipster” businesses.

The Top 10 Hippest Markets

According to the data from Realtor.com and Yelp, these are the top 10 hottest, hippest metro areas in the U.S.:

  1. Columbus, Ohio
  2. Seattle, Washington
  3. San Diego, California
  4. Fort Wayne, Indiana
  5. Rochester, New York
  6. San Francisco, California
  7. Long Beach, California
  8. Louisville, Kentucky
  9. Grand Rapids, Michigan
  10. Colorado Springs, Colorado

To create the list, Yelp used data to rank zip codes by the share of businesses with reviews containing the word “hipster.” Then, Realtor.com calculated the Market Hotness Index for each zip code, based on the number of page views each market received on the real estate site. Yelp and Realtor.com combined both sets of data to identify the zip code in each hot metro area with the most hipster businesses. Click here to see the full list.

What Makes it Hip?

Dictionary.com defines a hipster as “a usually young person who is trendy, stylish, or progressive in an unconventional way.” So what makes a city or a neighborhood “hip”? Obviously, a growing population of hipsters.

Moiz Malik, Chief Technology Officer of real estate website Nooklyn, broke it down further in a story on vice.com: “People want to live where the action is, if they can afford to, and feel like they can walk around at night free of too much fear.”

So it seems to be a combination of cool stuff to do, affordability, and safety. Then, as more cool people move there, more cool businesses open — and it starts to snowball into a very hip place.

According to a story on BizWomen, “farm-to-table restaurants, dive bars, breweries and independent record stores give a city a ‘hipster’ vibe — and also attract home buyers.” Realtor.com reports, “A concentration of hipsters seems to be an indicator of a hot housing market.”

The report broke down some details on each market. Here’s what they had to say about the hipness of Louisville, and specifically the Schnitzelberg neighborhood:

  • The draw: With a strong community and affordable local restaurant scene, Schnitzelberg has seen growing popularity over the past several years. It’s a quirky neighborhood with traditions like hosting the World Dainty Championship the last Monday of July.
