Louisville: America’s Aging Capital?

If you live in the Louisville area, you know that we have a large number of aging-care businesses that are based here. What might have been one of our best-kept secrets is now national news. Forbes recently published a story titled, Why Louisville is becoming America’s aging capital… and here’s what they reported to the rest of the world about our city and this dynamic, expanding industry sector.

We’ve Got the Business

According to the Forbes report, Louisville is home to the country’s largest cluster of lifelong wellness and aging care businesses. This includes nursing homes, home-based health care, hospice, and other senior living services. The following companies all have headquarters here in our area: Humana, Kindred Healthcare, Trilogy Health Services, Atria Senior Living, and Signature HealthCare.

What’s All This Business Mean for Louisville?

Together, these companies employ more than 21,000 professionals and produce over $50 billion in revenue. That’s great news for our city! And that’s why our leaders want to build on this foundation to become a true “center of innovation” to improve the quality of life for our nation’s elderly population.

That means attracting talented workers and ambitious entrepreneurs to the area. According to Mayor Greg Fischer, “We’re really focused on the innovation aspect… (and) developing an innovation district in the city.”

To his point, the recently formed Louisville Healthcare CEO Council is comprised of the heads of 10 companies. And the impressive Thrive Innovation Center, which opened last October, is a $1 million public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Louisville Metro, along with companies such as CDW Healthcare, Ergotron, Intel, Samsung, Lenovo and local health care firms like Signature HealthCare and Kindred Healthcare.

Thrive will become “a meeting place for consumers, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and aging-well organizations to test out technologies, products and services aimed at improving the quality of life and the quality of care of older Americans,” according to the Forbes report.
