The Breeders’ Cup is the Super Bowl of horse racing. The best of the best compete once a year during the 2-day Breeders’ Cup World Championship. Prestigious horse racing like no other, more money is wagered for this event than any other in the world.
Starting back in 1984, The Breeders’s Cup race was created as a way to give dibs to the most successful horses of the year. If football and basketball can have a champion, why shouldn’t horse racing? Winning the coveted championship is one thing, but the road to get to the race isn’t as easy as you might think. Stallions are nominated annually for the upcoming season. Starting in 2007, the “win and you’re in” system allows runners to bypass the nomination process for winning select races. Eighty-five races in twelve countries make it difficult to earn a spot in the championship.
There are different races for different categories of horses. The Classic is considered to be the “main event” of the Breeders’ Cup, and is open to 3-year-olds and up, running a distance of 1 1/4 miles on the dirt track. This race has the largest purse at $6 million.
Fans of horse racing across the world are given the opportunity to watch the race each and every year. With the growth and success of the championship, The Breeders’ Cup is televised for all to see. If watching it on TV isn’t enough for you, the race changes location almost every year. Santa Anita Park has hosted the event a record nine different years. The Breeders’ Cup is coming back to Churchill Downs Louisville in 2018, which will make it the ninth time to host the event.
Whether you are a fan of watching beautiful horses run or enjoy betting and hopefully winning big, The Breeders’ Cup is coming November 2-3, 2018. For more information on how you can purchase tickets to this event click here.
